Manual Transmission Identification
Over the production run of the DeLorean DMC-12, two variations of manual transmissions were implemented from the factory. Cars manufactured early in production (referenced by VIN 500-1000 approximately) often have a different transaxle than the rest of production.
369-03 Variant
The early style transmission was used at the beginning of production. This is easily identifiable by looking at the input shaft. The transmission will utilize a 10-spline clutch disc.
369-08 Variant
The most common transmission used during production and what is found on most cars. This is easily identifiable by looking at the input shaft. The transmission will utilize a 21-spline clutch disc.
Both transmissions from the factory came with an identification tag on the rear housing. Over the years, the tag usually disappears from maintenance and so forth. Using the VIN range is an acceptable way to properly ascertain what clutch a vehicle requires. Pulling the unit and inspecting the shaft without the tag is the only absolute method for identification.
